Becoming a first-time mum: Lucy's Parental Leave Journey

PEXA’s Wellbeing and WHS Manager, Lucy Churkovich, recently returned to the office after taking 40 weeks of Primary Carer Leave, at half pay, to experience the joys and responsibilities of new motherhood.

“I think the benefits absolutely make you feel really supported, and I think PEXA really values the role you’re doing outside of work too,” Lucy shared.

Now, she’s utilising 30 days of Flexi Leave to ease her transition back to the office, allowing her to return part time but be paid at full-time rate.

Inclusive Parental Leave Benefits

PEXA’s parental leave policy recognises that every family is unique. We’re committed to supporting working parents by offering flexible parental leave to bond with new family members, adjust and ease their transition back to work.

Benefits for primary carers

Benefits for primary carers

  • 20 weeks Paid Parental Leave at full pay or 40 weeks Paid Parental Leave at half pay.
  • 30 days of Flexi Leave enabling a flexible return to work. Flexi Leave allows the primary carer to return to work part-time and use their Flexi leave to ‘top up’ their days to receive full time pay.
  • Up to 12 months Unpaid Parental Leave (with option to request an extension by up to 12 months).
  • Superannuation is paid on unpaid parental leave (for the first 12 months).

  • Up to 12 weeks of paid Secondary Carers Leave

Flexible Working Arrangements

As part of our commitment to being an accredited Family-Friendly Workplace, PEXA offers a range of ways to flex to help our team members better integrate their career with personal and family responsibilities.

Benefits include:

  • Our Hybrid Working policy allows team members whose roles allow for location flexibility to work a mix from either at home and in the office, with a minimum of two days expected in the office. This helps our team members to craft a work schedule that helps to balance their work responsibilities with balancing personal commitments, as well as supporting effective collaboration and connection. 
  • Our Workcation benefit allows eligible employees to work remotely for up to four weeks per year (in an approved country), enabling them to extend personal travel and spend more time with family and friends in other parts of the world.

Additional Family Benefits

PEXA provides several additional benefits to support team members with their family responsibilities and overall wellbeing:

  • Wellness Days allow employees to take a day off once a quarter (up to a total of four wellness days per year) on top of their annual lave entitlements.
  • Team members have the ability to access Purchased Leave, (up to four weeks of leave) which can offer more time away if needed to use for extended holidays, juggling school holidays or other life events.

Balancing Act: Tom's Parental Leave Story

As a new dad, Tom was grateful for PEXA’s generous 12 weeks of paid Secondary Carer Leave. He took six weeks of leave upfront, and used the remaining 6 weeks to work flexibly part time. This invaluable break allowed him to fully adjust to “dad life” and build a strong bond with his daughter Matilda from the very start.

But PEXA’s family-friendly benefits extend far beyond those first few weeks. Tom enjoys a quarterly wellness day to spend time with Matilda. Plus, being able to work from home a couple days a week means no commuting time lost – he’s already home when he finishes for the day. As Tom puts it, “I don’t miss out on any special moments.”
